FCT Infrastructural Development: Airport Bypass Road Opens To Rural Users After 16 Months

President Bola Tinubu has commissioned a 7 kilometre access road linking Bill Clinton Drive to Tungan Madaki and surrounding communities in the Federal Capital Territory.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by Rabi Musa Umar, Deputy Director, Press, Office of the FCT Minister. At the inauguration held in Abuja on June 18, 2026, Tinubu, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, said communities that gave up land for the construction of the second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport should not be excluded from the benefits of development.
He said the project was designed to address challenges faced by residents whose ancestral lands were acquired for the airport expansion, stressing that no citizen should suffer because of national development.
Located within the FCT Aerotropolis District, the project comprises a 7 kilometre two lane road, a four span bridge and 14 kilometres of concrete lined drainage. The road links Bill Clinton Drive to Tungan Madaki and improves access to at least eight neighbouring communities.
Tinubu said the project received approval in February 2025 and was completed within 16 months. He added that the road would improve mobility, support economic activities and ease the movement of agricultural produce within the area.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said residents of Tungan Madaki requested jobs and road infrastructure rather than financial compensation, adding that the FCT Administration had responded to those demands.
He disclosed that the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, had been directed to extend the road from Tungan Madaki to Zuba by December 2026. He also said the FCTA would issue Certificates of Occupancy to residents and warned land speculators against encroaching on the corridor.
Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Richard Dauda, said the project forms part of ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure across the FCT. According to him, the road will improve security around the airport corridor and strengthen links between rural communities and other parts of the territory.
