Philip Jeremiah Eke, Yenagoa
Bayelsa State is on the brink of sporting greatness as it positions itself to host the 2028 National Sports Festival, with preparations earning high praise from the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade. During a landmark inspection visit to Government House, Yenagoa, Olopade described Bayelsa as a “sleeping giant” ready to awaken and take its place on the national stage.
Governor Douye Diri, a former Commissioner for Sports and a passionate advocate for youth development, reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to completing all necessary infrastructure ahead of the festival. Central to this vision is the construction of a state-of-the-art 25,000-capacity stadium—expandable to 35,000—which has already received 30% of its funding and is on track for completion by 2027.
Beyond infrastructure, Bayelsa is investing heavily in security and hospitality. CCTV surveillance systems now monitor the state round-the-clock, contributing to a significant reduction in crime and ensuring a safe environment for athletes and visitors alike.
Governor Diri emphasized Bayelsa’s welcoming spirit, noting that his administration includes commissioners and advisers from outside the state—a testament to its openness and inclusivity.
Bayelsa’s sporting pedigree is rooted in grassroots development. The Governor’s Prosperity Cup has become a breeding ground for football talent, while the state boasts elite facilities for wrestling and table tennis—two sports where Bayelsa has consistently excelled. After inspecting medical facilities, wrestling gyms, table tennis halls, and the stadium site, NSC DG Bukola Olopade was unequivocal in his endorsement:
Adding his voice, Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali—an Olympic and world wrestling champion—hailed the governor’s commitment to sports, stating that Bayelsa is now admired globally for its strategic investment and vision.
Bayelsa’s bid is more than a proposal—it’s a promise. A promise of excellence, unity, and a celebration of Nigerian sportsmanship. The countdown to 2028 has begun, and Bayelsa is ready to lead.
