In a bold step to ease the financial and physical burden on Nigerians battling kidney-related illnesses, the Federal Government has slashed the cost of dialysis from N50,000 to N12,000 per session.
The pilot program is already underway in 11 federal tertiary hospitals across all geopolitical zones, including Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, University of Jos Teaching Hospital, National Hospital Abuja, Federal Medical Centre Ebute-Metta, University College Hospital Ibadan, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa, Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri, and Federal Medical Centre Abakaliki.
According to a press statement released on Wednesday by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director/Head, Information and Public Relations, officials emphasized that no region—including the Northwest—is excluded from the subsidy. Plans are underway to expand the program to more hospitals, ensuring wider access for patients nationwide.
“This initiative reflects our commitment that no Nigerian is left behind in accessing essential healthcare services,” the statement added, highlighting the administration’s “renewed hope” agenda.
The subsidy is expected to dramatically reduce the financial and physical strain on patients and their families, marking a major step toward universal health coverage in Nigeria.
