A former presidential candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Major General John Gbor (rtd), has called for a credible and violence-free governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states scheduled for September and October, 2020 respectively.
General Gbor made the call while receiving State Coordinators of a non-governmental organisation, Network of Leaders Alliance (NLA) in Abuja.
He expressed concern over electoral malpractices in the country, saying the only way to ensure good governance and purposeful leadership was through free and fair elections.
He also stressed the need for people of the Edo and Ondo States to shun vote-buying and elect governors that would deliver dividends of democracy to them, adding that INEC and security agencies must be committed to the success and peaceful conduct of the elections.
While urging all political parties and stakeholders in the polls to give peace a chance, Major General Gbor said election was all about service to humanity and not avenue for illegal wealth acquisition.
He also reminded the National Assembly on the need to commence work on Electoral Act, 2010 Amendment Bill in order to strengthen the nation’s democratic system.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the NGO, Dr. John Paul, said the visit was to recognise the contributions of General Gbor to the wellbeing of the less-privileged, youths and women in the society.
Dr. Paul expressed the readiness of the organisation (NLA) to support Gbor’s activities in uplifting the living standard of Nigerians through the John Gbor Foundation.
