The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has called for faster judicial processes to improve criminal investigations and the prosecution of cases, saying delays in criminal proceedings contribute to prolonged detention of suspects in police custody.
Sanusi made the appeal during a meeting with the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, on Wednesday, July 8, at the High Court of the FCT in Abuja, where both officials discussed measures to strengthen collaboration between the police and the judiciary.
According to a statement issued Friday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, Sanusi appealed for the prompt issuance of search warrants, bench warrants and other judicial authorizations needed to support investigations, law enforcement operations and the prosecution of criminal cases.
Sanusi said delays in the prosecution of some criminal cases sometimes result in suspects remaining in police custody for extended periods, contributing to congestion in police detention facilities.
Yusuf acknowledged the concerns raised by the police commissioner and said the judiciary would continue to provide the institutional support needed to promote efficient justice delivery in the FCT. He also identified areas requiring police attention and stressed the need for sustained cooperation between the judiciary and the police.
The meeting underscored ongoing efforts by both institutions to strengthen coordination in the administration of criminal justice across the Federal Capital Territory.
