Get Tinubu’s Title Right, SGF Warns Media
Nafisat Makinde, Abuja

The Federal Government on Thursday cautioned media organisations and public institutions against repeated errors in the official designation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following what it described as an incorrect presidential designation used in a publication by a national daily.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yomi Odunuga.
According to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the clarification became necessary after an error was observed in the naming and designation of the President in a publication issued on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
In the statement personally signed in Abuja by George Akume, the SGF said the correct and official title of the President is: “His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Akume said the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had observed with concern that several organisations and media outlets continued to publish inaccurate references to the President’s office despite established official protocols.
He urged journalists, editors and institutions to verify official titles before publication to avoid what he described as “avoidable and embarrassing errors” in public communication.
Akume also advised media organisations and public communication officers to make use of the Office’s official channels for verification and clarification on government protocol matters.
He listed the Office’s verified communication platforms as Facebook: @OfficeoftheSGF, Instagram: OfficialOSGFNG, X (formerly Twitter): OfficialOSGF, and the official email address: info@osgf.gov.ng.
