The Federal Government has appointed Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili as the substantive Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) following a selection process in which petitions were reviewed before the appointment was approved.

The appointment was announced by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, in a statement signed by Ado Bako, Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations. According to the statement, petitions received during the recruitment process were subjected to legal review and were found not to invalidate the exercise.

Salako said Ofili emerged as the top candidate among five shortlisted applicants after a competitive selection process conducted in line with the law establishing the Council. Vacancies were advertised in national newspapers and applications were assessed against established criteria before the final selection was made.

“The process was diligent and thorough. Having emerged as the best candidate, it became necessary to regularise the leadership of the Council so it can continue to discharge its statutory responsibilities effectively,” the minister said.

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria regulates the training, practice and professional standards of medical laboratory scientists in the country. Salako described medical laboratory science as a critical component of healthcare delivery, noting that accurate diagnosis remains essential to effective treatment and quality patient care.

He charged the new Registrar to strengthen regulation, enhance professional standards and advance the development of medical laboratory science in Nigeria. He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting healthcare professionals and improving health outcomes through collaboration across the sector.

In his response, Ofili pledged to strengthen regulatory oversight, uphold professional standards, improve staff welfare and work closely with stakeholders across the profession. He said the Council would continue to align its activities with ongoing reforms in the health sector.

The appointment takes immediate effect and will run for a four-year tenure in accordance with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Act.
