NUJ Press Week Lecture and Awards Ceremony – AIG Jimoh Moshood bags FCT Crime Fighter of the Year Award

In recognition of his remarkable contributions towards the prevention of crimes and criminality, The Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ), FCT Chapter has awarded the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh as the Crime Fighter of the year.The award is a recognition of his professionalism in the Nigerian Police Force.

Also awarded and decorated on the occasion were the Managing Editor(Nothern Operation) of The Nation Newspaper, Alh.Yusuf Alli who bagged the Investigative Journalism Excellence Award, Azu Ishiekwene, Editor of Leadership Newspaper, former NUJ President, Christopher Isiguzo as well as other distinguished individuals.

The event held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Tuesday, 19th May,2026 with the theme:” 2027 Election:Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation. ” the former Minority leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Godwin Elumelu who seved as the Guest Speaker beckoned on the Nigerian media to defend democracy amid the growing threat of disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Elumelu “democracy thrives when citizens are properly informed and able to make rational choices, but when falsehood dominates the public space, the foundation of democracy becomes endangered long before ballots are cast.”

He said disinformation, misinformation and propaganda have evolved into a dangerous tools used to distort public perception, weaken institutions, erode public trust and inflame political tensions. That journalists remain custodians of truth and guardians of public enlightenment.

The former lawmaker emphasized the need for media organizations to adhere to media professionalism, fact-check mechanism, deepen investigative reporting and leverage technology to combat fake news and harmful digital content. He also urged journalists to resist political pressure and refuse to serve as tools in spreading propaganda and divisive narratives.
