President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed retired Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security as the administration seeks to strengthen intelligence coordination and tackle Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam. The Presidency said the appointment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving inter-agency collaboration and enhancing responses to emerging threats across the country.

Nigeria has continued to grapple with terrorism in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, kidnapping and violent crimes in parts of the North-Central and South. The country’s security challenges have intensified calls for improved intelligence sharing and stronger coordination among security agencies.

According to the statement, Famadewa was appointed in recognition of his “exceptional record of service, strategic expertise, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s national security architecture.” The retired general brings more than three decades of military and intelligence experience spanning counter-terrorism operations, intelligence management, national security strategy and international security diplomacy.

Famadewa served as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021, where he played a major role in shaping Nigeria’s intelligence coordination framework. During his tenure, he spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre, an integrated platform designed to improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination among key intelligence and security institutions.

Following his retirement from active military service, Famadewa continued policy and research work at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, focusing on policing, civil-security cooperation and national security reforms. He also authored the monograph, “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which examined strategies for strengthening collaboration between civil institutions and security agencies.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the appointment would “further enhance the administration’s efforts toward achieving a safer and more secure Nigeria” through improved intelligence integration and proactive risk management. The President also urged the retired general to deploy his experience and strategic expertise in advancing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The appointment comes as the Tinubu administration faces growing pressure to curb insecurity and improve coordination among the country’s security institutions.
