Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) against naming roads constructed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration without first obtaining approval from the FCTA.

According to a statement on Wednesday by Deputy Director of Press in the Office of the FCT Minister, Rabi Musa Umar, Wike gave the warning during the commissioning of the full scope development of Akinwumi Ajibola Street, covering Important Local Streets 16, 18 and 19, in Gaduwa District, Abuja. He said while area councils have the authority to name roads within their jurisdictions, they must obtain approval where the roads were funded and constructed by the Federal Government or a state government.

“If the street is within the city, and it is the government of the state or the Federal Government that constructed that road, permission must be taken from either the state or the Federal Government before you name those roads or streets,” Wike was quoted as saying. The statement added that the FCTA would soon begin naming newly completed roads across the Federal Capital Territory to ensure uniformity and avoid confusion.

The statement said President Bola Tinubu, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, commended Wike for improving infrastructure delivery across the FCT. It quoted the President as saying the minister had ended the era of abandoned road projects by ensuring contractors were paid on time and projects completed as scheduled.

According to the statement, Tinubu said the newly completed Gaduwa road network would improve access for residents, strengthen connectivity and increase property values in the district.

The statement added that Wike attributed the pace of infrastructure development in the FCT to the support of President Tinubu and the timely passage of the FCT statutory budgets by the National Assembly, saying road projects were being delivered across districts and satellite towns.

It also quoted the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Richard Dauda, as saying the Gaduwa road project was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited in January 2026 and completed within six months. He said the project includes two carriageways with parking lanes, street lighting, telecommunications ducts and links to adjoining districts to improve connectivity, security and economic activities in the area.
